Evil Dead Burn
Reviewed by Entertainment DNTVVerdict: 8.5/10 – A scorching, gut-churning addition to the Evil Dead franchise that delivers relentless gore but trades some of the series’ wild charm for pure, unrelenting brutality.
Director Sébastien Vaniček (who impressed with Infested) steps into the Evil Dead universe and turns up the heat—literally. Evil Dead Burn follows Alice (Souheila Yacoub), a grieving widow who joins her late husband’s dysfunctional American family at their secluded home. What starts as a tense family reunion quickly spirals into a nightmarish “family from hell” when Deadites start possessing the relatives one by one.
The film leans hard into the franchise’s signature practical gore and inventive kills, this time with a fiery, heat-based demonic twist. Expect boiling flesh, melting skin, chainsaw-level carnage, and some truly nasty set pieces involving household items turned weapons. Vaniček knows how to stage chaos, and the practical effects team goes all out—fans of extreme horror will eat this up.
What works:
- Souheila Yacoub brings real intensity as the lead, making Alice a compelling final girl with emotional weight.
- The family dynamics add a layer of dark drama before the bloodbath kicks in.
- Standout gross-out moments and creative kills that feel fresh within the Evil Dead formula.
- Strong atmosphere and a few genuinely unsettling sequences.
What holds it back:
- It’s relentlessly grim. The gonzo humor and slapstick energy of classic Evil Dead
is mostly absent, making this feel more like a brutal family horror drama than the wild ride many fans love. - Pacing drags slightly in the middle as family tensions build.
- Some plot elements feel familiar if you’ve seen the recent entries.
If you’re in the mood for mean, merciless, effects-driven horror that doesn’t pull punches, Evil Dead Burn satisfies. It’s one of the nastiest entries yet, even if it burns a bit too hot on the misery and not enough on the fun. Gorehounds: this one’s for you. Casual fans might find it a tough, fiery sit.
Entertainment DNTV Rating:
Recommended for horror fans who like their Deadites extra vicious.
Catch it in theaters now. Just don’t watch on a full stomach.
